Historical Viticulture Data

Disclaimer: This page contains all the data we have been able to acquire from the previous manager of the vineyard.  As such we cannot assure its validity.     Consider this raw information which may or may not be correct or useful.   Some of the data appears to be incorrect.   This data is intended as reference data for the current vineyard management.  It is not intended for use by winemakers considering purchase of grapes from Konrad Vineyards.  Use this data at your own risk.

Below is the old block map used by the previous vineyard manager.  Most of the data included here is referenced using these  block labels.  We have since renamed the blocks K1 - K6 to correspond to the irrigation blocks with block K1 at the top and K6 at the bottom.   A copy of the newer map labeling scheme is included here below the old map.

Old Block Numbering Scheme   Use this to understand what the historical data here refers to.

Petiole analysis at bloom 2009  This most recent analysis shows improved nitrogen levels but still some deficiency which was addressed with a fertigation at bloom.  Boron and Copper foliar sprays were also applied to address the deficiencies seen in those trace nutrients.  They were applied in conjunction with wettable sulfur applications for powdery mildew.

The petiole analysis below from 2008 shows a major nitrogen deficiency in the the largest block of the vineyard which we believe is the primary cause of the low yields this vineyard has had in the past.  Block 3 corresponds to blocks K2+K3+K4 in the new labeling scheme.

From the data below it is unclear what was growing in block 2 between its planting and when it was budded to clone 7 in 2006.   We know that Malbec was growing in this block for some time.   Either it was budded to Malbec in 2003 or was budded to clone 7 in 2003 and then rebudded to Malbec sometime between 2003 and 2005.  We think it was most likely budded to Malbec in 2003 and to clone 7 in 2006.

The Irrigation data below is likely not correct.    The reservoir is estimated to contain 2 acre feet of water which is 650,000 gallons of water.   At the end of 2008 the pond was essentially empty which you can see at  http://67.44.213.62/Konrad/Infrastructure.htm yet the table below indicates that only 158,829 gallons were used in 2008, only 24% of the total reservoir volume.  It is likely that something closer to 60-80 gallons was used per vine in 2008.

The red Xs on the plot below are data points taken in Konrad Vineyards by M.Holler in 2008 to validate the soil moisture correlation to leaf water potentials that we intend to use in 2009 for irrigation management.

The total tonnage numbers appear to be correct based on Dr. Konrad's recollections but the Tons per acre numbers by block appear to be backed out of the total tonnage using block acreages, except for 2006 which could be real.

The images below are of questionable value.  Camalie Vineyards found that they were most indicative of the cover crop vigor, not the vine vigor.  At the top of block K2 you can see a large round patch of weeds that is half in the vineyard and half outside which shows up in the vineyard as higher vigor.  No correlation of this flyover data to actual vigor data on the ground was available from the photographer.  We have not done any such correlation but can say offhand that these images are misleading in at least a few areas.
